The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern was built in 1796 as a private residence, and a stage coach stop after the revolutionary war. It later served as a parsonage. Since then, the name and owners have changed several times. The town purchased the building in 1941 to preserve the property. A brother and sister team, Gordon Butler and his sister Helen Wilson, ran the business and later Helen’s son, Dick Wilson, took the helm as a proprietor of the business as the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, which became former President Richard Nixon’s favorite place to dine. Most recently, in 2009, Ho-Ho-Kus residents and admirers of the Inn, Gordon and Laurie Hamm, re-opened the property after a seven-month, $1.5 million renovation project. It is now called the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, a Zagat rated restaurant, notably quoted by guests as a “memorable dining experience”.
