Best Steaks in the Oldest Restaurant in New Jersey

If you are in Ho Ho Kus, New Jersey in Bergen County looking for a “fine casual” dining restaurant that serves classic American cuisine, visit the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, a local gem among locals. We pride ourselves on being one of the oldest restaurants in New Jersey where you can get some of the BEST STEAKS in NJ.  The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern was built in 1796 as a private residence, and a stage coach stop after the revolutionary war.  It later served as a parsonage. Since then, the name and owners have changed several times. The town purchased the building in 1941 to preserve the property. A brother and sister team, Gordon Butler and his sister Helen Wilson, ran the business and later Helen’s son, Dick Wilson, took the helm as a proprietor of the business as the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn, which became former President Richard Nixon’s favorite place to dine.  Most recently, in 2009, Ho-Ho-Kus residents and admirers of the Inn, Gordon and Laurie Hamm, re-opened the property after a seven-month, $1.5 million renovation project. It is now called the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, a Zagat rated restaurant, notably quoted by guests as a “memorable dining experience”.

David Corcoran, New York Times food critic, praises our manager, Rob Lipkin, for his energetic attitude and for importing exceptional wine from places like Chile and South Africa. Our chef, Jesus Murillo, also received praise for his grilled ostrich which he described as “remarkably tender and juicy, bolstered by zesty cherry chutney”.

Our menu offers seasonal casual selections with four locally inspired burgers, as well as sandwiches, soups, salads and small plates, or you can choose from our upscale seasonal dining choices from our Dinner Menu that offers steak lovers delicious Steakhouse Selections. We offer Filet Mignon, NY Strip, and Pork Chop butcher cuts of meat and our wonderful Steak Frites which are steaks and perfectly seasoned house-cut fries. You will also find foods on our menu like, oysters, crab cakes, octopus, wings, shrimp, mussels, calamari, fish tacos, chicken, and lasagna.

Our great history makes it one of the best venues in New Jersey for private dining events. You can transform one of our dining rooms into the perfect space for your event. We offer high top cocktail tables and tables for seating. Our event spaces are typically reserved for birthdays, anniversaries,
